Matthes Crest (5.7) © Simon Caldwell
A superb knife edge arete on granite in Yosemite National Park and south of the campsite at Tuolumne Meadows. A long approach but beautiful country. The ridge is mostly scrambling but has pitches up to 5.7 and involves some abseils.
An American classic and totally recommended.
From H120 west of Tuolumne campsite at Cathedral Lakes trailhead, walk south on the JMT for about 10 mins then head south on fainter trail up Budd Creek to Budd Lake. Skirt on west (right) then south round the west of Echo Peaks to see Mathes Crest. Head cross country for 30 minutes to the south end of Mathes Crest.
