The wall to the left of Shielhill Cave © JLS

Crag features

Probably best described as esoteric, the cliff to the left of the actual cave (come bothy) has a little potential for a few hard boulder problems. A visit in January saw a lot of seepage but some signs of chalk and cleaned holds suggested others have found better conditions.

Approach notes

Approach: 3 minutes (down hill).

Dunrod Road between the A78 (near Inverkip) and Greenock Cut visitor centre has a road closure due to land slip. The quickest approach to the crag is from the Inverkip side of the closure. Turn off the A78 Westbound carriageway onto Dunrod Road. Continue on Dunrod road until where the road closure is reached. Parking for a few cars is available. On foot, retrace back along the road to the sharp bend (200m). Step over the crash barrier and descend through the woods, into the gorge on a zigzag path. The cave will appear shortly.

Alternatively, from Greenock, drive to the Greenock Cut visitor centre (large car park). From there walk along Dunrod Road down to and through the road closure (1 mile) and continue as described above.
