South Quarry © petegunn
Two quarries one on the upstream side and the other larger one, on the downstream side of the impressive Lambley Viaduct.
The quarries are impressive but the rock is quite friable with loose top outs but some routes were made by M Johnson and S Puncheon though I cant find any details.
Would probably make a superb bolted venue for those with the time and effort.
The shortest approach is 5mins from the Coanwood car park (approx 4 cars) or slightly further at the official Lambley Viaduct South Tyne Trail Car Park (15mins 10 cars).
30mins from Carlisle M6 Junction 43 or 1hr from Penrith via Alston.
Follow the old railway line to the top of the viaduct where a descent at the far end can be made via some steps before re-crossing the river via the footbridge. Probably better to use this approach rather than climbing over the fence at the start of the viaduct.
