Climbs 1
Rocktype Sandstone (soft)
Altitude 101m a.s.l
Faces E

Crag features

Huge faces of soft red sandstone up to 30m high.

Climbs have been made here in years gone by but have depended entirely on aid from pegs and bolts, many of these can still be seen slowly rotting away.

The lower section of the main quarry can provide some steep bouldering but would need(s) a great deal of work to be made into a climbable state.

Approach notes

The Gelt Woods is a famous beauty spot easily accessed from the A69 just west of Brampton.

There is a small car park at Low Gelt Bridge and another layby at the far end of the woods at the impressive viaduct of Middle Gelt Bridge.

The main quarries are roughly positioned halfway between the two parking areas. The walk itself is very scenic and popular with walkers and runners.

Access Advice

There is an area near the river where there are some rare Roman inscriptions, unfortunately the path leading up to them collapsed in the 1980s but a team funded by Historic England has 3D photographed them for the future.
