Crag features

A small crag that has often been viewed but remained unclimbed. It presents short but steep and interesting challenges.  The walls face west and so catch any sunlight from late morning/early afternoon, depending on the time of year. The crag dries fairly quickly but there can be some seepage so is best avoided in winter or wet weather.  The rock can be brittle low down but most of the loose stuff has been removed and the quality improves with height. Some of the routes are eliminate in nature but this does provide more lines to make a visit, or even a return visit, worthwhile.

Approach notes

From Malham two options are possible:

1) Follow the road and park at Gordale (tea wagon on many days).Go through a gate and take the path leading towards Malham Cove. After three more gates and below the Grey Gill dry valley the crag comes into view. Follow the west side of the wall to below the crag. The wall doesn’t quite reach the crag so is easily crossed.

2) Leave the village going towards Gordale but turn left and drive up the road (Malham Rakes) on the east side of the cove. There are a couple of parking spaces where the Dales High Way footpath crosses the road and there are stiles on each side.  The path can be followed eastwards to the base of Grey Gill.  10 - 15 Minutes by either route.
