Crag features

The Sasso della Mantesca is a formation of ophiolitic rocks that rises from the pastures opposite Piancaldoli. The rock is mainly composed of masses of gabbro separated by serpentinite chrystals.

The crag offers an interesting rock type and 51 routes with great views of the surrounding Appenino Tosco-Romagnolo.

The crag is also known as Sasso del Diavolo (i.e. devil's rock) as legend has it that the rock was dumped out of fatigue by the devil after losing a bet to San Zanobi, who won by carrying his rock further up the mountain. The Sasso di San Zanobi, also an ophiolitic rock, can be seen on the drive leading to the crag.

Approach notes

Coming from Bologna, take the SP 7 of the Idice Valley. Uphill towards the pass of Passo della Raticosa, after passing the villages of Monterenzio, Bisano and San Benedetto del Querceto, you arrive in the locality of Palazza. Leaving the La Palazza restaurant on the right, you come to a crossroads (to the left) with indications for La Martina (via Casoni di Romagna). The junction can be recognized by the signs to the campsite of the same name and by some rubbish bins (44.221013,11.352296).
Climb up to the aforementioned location. After passing the town, after a few hairpin bends, you arrive at a large open space on the ridge between the Idice and Sillaro valleys. The entire route described so far is paved. You can leave your vehicles here and continue on foot for about 1.2 km. The forest road that you follow is also marked with the CAI 801 signpost. This is the well-known Flaminia Minor route which from the pass with Tuscany reaches Ozzano in Emilia. In about 20 minutes you can see on the right the large blocks protruding from a dense woodland. Near a passage among the brambles, following some tracks, you can reach the base of the various blocks
