Crag features

A single, low, rounded, erratic schist-like boulder, with lovely scaly roughness and remarkable pockets, situated at the edge of woodland by the Wharry Burn, within the Kippenrait Glen SAC, near Dunblane. Although low in stature it has several good problems negotiating the southwest-facing roof. The sillier short straight-up problems provide a foil to the harder lip traverse, and if you need a rest from both then explore the historic Loup o’ Pendreigh crossing of the Wharry Burn, about 20 metres downstream of the boulder. It’s a quiet spot, but people have been passing this boulder for millennia, including those fleeing the Battle of Sherriffmuir.

Approach notes

A road once linked Bridge of Allan to Dunblane, crossing the Wharry Burn at a bridge just below a sandstone gorge. Landslips caused the road to be closed to cars, but it remains surfaced and forms a pleasant woodland walk/cycle between the two towns. Approach either from Bridge of Allan via Glen Road, or via Sheriffmuir Road from Dunblane. Drive as far along either road as you can, but please park sensibly, and walk to the old bridge. Take a steep path up to the right of the bridge looking upstream and bear left at a fork to follow the path north above the spectacular gorge. The Loup Stone is next to the path after a few hundred metres, where the gorge terminates. About 20 minutes’ walk for the BofA approach, 10 minutes for the Dunblane approach. By public transport it is about 40 minutes’ walk, mostly uphill, from the train station in either town.
