Crag features

The quarry is generally south facing, with great views out across the valley of Carrbrook and over a wild expanse of moorland to Featherbed Moss in the east, whilst 70kms away to the southwest over the Cheshire plain the hills of North Wales can be seen on a clear day, but who needs Wales when you’re in Cowbury!

The quarry is steep, almost vertical throughout, and generally very quick drying though with some seepage from cracks immediately after rain.

Good topo here.

Approach notes

The quarry is 1km (15 mins) from the Castle Clough car park. Either walk up left alongside the bowling green and cross the road at Beaconsfield Terrace then go right behind the terrace to find the gate and style signed Cowbury Dale, where the quarry track starts, or from the car park, cross over to the Buckton Vale Institute and walk up Long Row on the other side of the bowling green to a cross roads with a style opposite on the left signed Cowbury Green then follow the path to meet the quarry track. This rises steadily up past willows and oak woods. Ignore the right fork to the Cowbury Green Reservoir, which is down in the valley and continue up until the track contours back left past the quarry mouth.

No Access Issues

The crag burnt clean in 2019 and is now orange rather than grit brown or moss green. A little bit of grass has returned to a few of the routes.  Quite a lot of loose rock.

South facing, so gets lots of sun; very quiet; nice views over Cheshire and a variety of grades.

The crag isn't fully described in Over the Moors but a free online pdf topo is available.

Not as bad as it's exclusion from Over The Moors would have you expect.. Mostly solid rock and some nice lines. Only let down is lack of belays and the very loose top outs. Fire damaged fence posts on the whole, though some have been recently replacing to keep the working quarry fence upright!

I wouldn't say this is a great venue, but it's worth a visit. It's definitely better than some of the appalling holes in the ground described in the Lancashire guide!
