La Ensenada de Raul is a small, hidden valley in the mogotes behind Raul Reyes farm. This area contails the highest number of moderate grade routes in Vinales and is an excellent starting point for visiting or neophyte climbers. Crops are grown in this area, so care must be taken while hiking between cliffs. The term 'ensenada' loosely translates to mean 'cove' or 'bay'.
The routes in the ensenada are clustered in small groups on crags scattered around the edge of the little valley. Some of these crags are easily recognizable, such as Punta Repaso and Punta Lider, but others are hidden behind the trees. The different orientations of the cliffs allow you to pick shaded routes at any time of the day.
Approach notes
From Raul Reyes farm you can easily spot the entrance to the ensenada just left of the Arista Filo de Churchilla. To approach, walk past Raul's house to the north end of the farm and pass through the gate. Turn left and follow a trial toward Filo de Churchilla, the rocky uphill path will bring you directly into the ensenada. Once inside, the prominent white wall to the left is Punta Repaso and the lonely little mogote in front of you is Punta Lider. All thse cliffs are about a 30 minute walk from Vinales.
