Crag features

A popular two tier crag at Tønsåsen near Stjørdal. The crag featuring routes 10-20m in length and with varying steepness about 30 mins drive from Trondheim centre. The Hell crag is regarded as being one of the best local sports climbing crags in Norway and has a reputation for being very Beta-intensive.

The rock type for the upper teir (Main Wall) is meta-sedimentary and consists of vertically oriented beds of boulder meta-conglomerate with pelite, semi-pelite and psammite offering a good mix of pockets, jugs, crimps and edges. The routes in the upper tier are typically in the n6 to n8 grade band, but easier and much harder routes are there, including 3 lines by Adam Ondra. Some lines have their name written on the rock at the start of the route but not all.

A PDF topo for the majority of the upper tier / Main Wall is available here.

The lower tier (New Wave) developed in 2016 is composed of greenish-phyllite and features crimpy and slopey routes upto 12m in length. Routes here are typically easier with a number of moderately graded routes, the majority being in the n5 to n7 grade band. Some routes have their names written on stones at the base of the route.

As the New Wave area is a new development it is not featured i the guidebook but a PDF topo kindly produced by Stjørdal Klatreklubb is available here here.

There is a BBQ area at the New Wave area and a toilet situated on the path between the two tiers.

There is also a series of defences known as Tønsåsen Batteri dating from 1899-1902, during the union of Norway, to resist any potential Swedish invasion down the Stjørdal valley. Ideal for a little sightseeing.

Approach notes

Driving from Trondheim, take the E6 north and leave at the junction to the airport. Take a right at the first roundabout onto the Fv705 and continue straight through the second, over the bridge. Immediately after the bridge turn right staying on the Fv705. Turn left onto the Fv706 for Lånke then take the second right after the turning to the sports centre, onto the gravel road. Turn right again down a small gravel track to reach the car park at the back side of the Lånke Sports Centre. From here the crag is signposted "Klatrefelt" through the field. Follow the footpath around the edge of the field, you can go immediately right up a small path to the main wall or continue along to the New Wave area.
