Restricted Access
Access to the summit itself is restricted. For the trail (Sendero) No 10, which leads up the last 200 m to the summit, a free permit is required and is checked for.
Numbers are normally restricted to 200 per day. Due to the limititation, please reserve your permit (especially during high season) 6 to 8 weeks in advance.
If staying in the Altavista hut you don't need a permit, but you must have left the trail by 9 am.
Alternatively wait until the rangers take the last cable car down. (16:50 pm resp. 18:50 pm).
This quite long route starts on trail ("Sendero") No 1 left of the Visitors center in El Portillo (2.053 m). Follow it for ca. 15 min and then take the left on trail No 6. Follow it until you get past two metal posts and merge onto trail No 7. The roadway is now climbing in bends around the Huevos del Teide and eventually after a total of 7.5 km you will come to a sign post (2.722 m). Follow the now considerably steeper trail to the Refugio de Altavista (3.260 m) and from there to Mirador de La Fortaleza (3.537 m). Then join the trail No 11 to La Rambletas (3.550 m). The final trail (No 10) takes you up to the summit of Teide (3.718 m).
