Ascent in group of eight and also Pete Cooper as second leader. Ascent made from the Mouflons Hut (3200m, 10499ft) and by the south cwm south col route (Tizi n Toubkal, 3950m, 12959ft) grade F. Ascent: 967m (3173ft); Distance: 10km (6.3 miles); Time: 8h 25 mins (08.40h - 17.05h), 5h 15 mins to summit at 13.55h. Weather was a cloudless sky with powerful sunshine throughout the day. Temp. -2 deg on summit of Toubkal. A cold south wind blowing on approach to Tizi n Toubkal blowing spindrift off Toubkal West (4030m, 13222ft). Calmer on the final summit approach and no wind on the summit. Good snow cover from below the hut upwards but still lots of rock showing. Icy in places on compacted paths especially in shade. Crampons and axes used generally throughout the day. Several good ice falls seen during the day. Great views from Tizi n Toubkal and also from Toubkal itself over all the Atlas and to the Sahara Desert to the south but hazy in the distance. Birds seen included Alpine Chough, Dipper on streams near to hut, Alpine Accentor on Tizi n Toubkal and a possible Lammergeier/Golden Eagle (didn't get clear enough view really) on Toubkal summit. Group members were: Paul Poole (leader), Peter Cooper (leader), Ed, Rob, Kasia, Oliver, Janet, Marian and Riana.

TrekkingToubkal 15 Dec, 2012 Lead dnf At 4,167m, Mount Toubkal (4167m) is the highest mountain in North Africa. The 2 Days Toubkal Trek to the summit is challenging, but it requires no mountaineering experience and the panoramic view from he summit makes the hard work worthwhile. With the start of the 2 Days Toubkal Trek just a couple of hours drive from Marrakech, you can reach the summit and back within 2 Days Toubkal Trek and still have time to explore Morocco’s most captivating city, Marrakech the first day : After a transfer to the little village of Imlil we begin our trek. Heading along the Mizane Valley, we first pass the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. We then continue east and by crossing the flood plains our route takes us along mule tracks and up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. Crossing the river we eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), our stop for the night. Day 2: Early in the morning we make our attempt on the summit of Jebel Toukbal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. Our route takes us up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. When you reach the the summit you will see that the vistas across the surrounding landscape are quite breathtaking. From here there are unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. We will retrace our steps when we return down the mountain and head back towards Imlil.
