I stayed here as a self catering/B&B guest on a solo walking holiday, though it was more like having a gorgeous gite all to m yself! The rooms are all very clean and comfortable and the gite is equipped with above & beyond everything you could need, including a great kitchen/lounge area and not only fab hot showers but also a BATH which was most welcome! Stunning views and a fabulous location for walking/climbing: some of the best trails and climbs are literally right on the doorstep. Jon & Deb went out of their way to make my holiday really lovely, with advice on great walks, loan of maps and guides and even providing transport for me on some days as I really wanted a car-free trip. Not to mention inviting me for dinner as it was my birthday while I was away! If you want a peaceful, laid-back, place as a base for exploring the stunning scenery of the area then you couldn't ask for more, though if you want to go further afield and get up to the high peaks for the day I would advise a car as there's not much in the way of public transport.
Stayed for 4 nights on a long climbing weekend and Base Calames was the ideal place to stay at. We found Base Calames extremely easy to find, about an hour and 10mins from Toulouse Airport, with excellent directions/map from the website. We were warmly welcomed by Jon and Debs, with the crags just around a corner and up the mountainside. We had enjoyable evenings in the well equipped gite / b & b communal living space, and had everything that we needed and more, as they had climbing dvds and magazines to entertain us too. The place offered self-catering facilities, but Jon and Debs also provided a good breakfast, and additional evening meals, which was great...Jon and Debs knew a lot about the local climbing areas and pointed us to locations, which was great as it helped us make the most of our stay. And importantly, the bedroom was comfortable and nicely done.
Excellent! I've just come back from two weeks staying here. We booked the whole place for our club which worked out significantly cheaper than camping. The accomodation's great, the owners are really nice and climb so are happy to give you all the info on the local crags. The closest end of Calames is 10ins walk and the crag a a whole has got everything from 4s to 8a. Loads more both limestone and granite within 30 mins drive.
we stayed in October 09. The Ariege is a fantastic area for rock climbing. Definitely my new favourite venue and very quiet - no polish! Basecamp Calames is a great location and superb good value accommodation, including breakfast. Very friendly hosts who can give you lots of info on the local climbing. We have booked the whole place as a gite for 10 of us this October.
I stayed here for a few nights recently. Fantastic place, comfy beds and great hosts. Really well situated for climbing on Calames (brilliant single and multi-pitch sun trap with climbing of all grades) and surrounding crags.
