LifeStraw originated as a simple pipe filter to assist the Carter Center with the eradication of Guinea worm disease. Since 1994 LifeStraw has provided some 40 million Guinea Worm filters to support the eradication programme.

Guinea worm disease is a parasitic infection contracted when people consume water from stagnant sources contaminated with the Guinea worm larvae. After about a year of incubation, the worm creates an agonizingly painful lesion on the skin and slowly emerges from the body. In addition to the intense pain, Guinea worm disease incapacitates people for extended periods of time.

In 1994 there were around 100,000 cases reported across 18 countries in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East. By the end of 2021 there were only 15 human cases reported in 4 countries.

Thanks to The Carter Centre and LifeStraw, Guinea worm is close to being eradicated. When it is finally eradicated, it will the first disease to be removed from the planet without the use of a vaccine.
