A new route was established last week by Russians Valery Babanov and Victor Afanasiev on the southwest face of Gasherbrum I (8068m) despite Afanasiev suffering a severe head injury from rockfall.

Russians seem to have the grit needed for these kinds of ascents.

In reply to Ackbar: Are you kidding? I'd say that was pretty major considering the situation they were in- I've seen people getting helicoptered off mountains for alot lesser things than that and they still continued up to the top...

In reply to Jon Griffith: Major head injury really suggests that you would not be an a state to climb to the summit of an 8000m mountain. It's just a word but when I read the title I assumed that it was a serious accident i.e brain damage, suffered on the descent.
