Not a stupid suggestion at all. I think electrical activity is often seen in big avalanches.
I think that using artillery is a common method of dealing with loaded avalanche slopes. I'm sure I've seen footage of Americans doing the same in Colarado.

In all fairness that was a massive slide, it looked like it stripped off a couple of nearby peaks in addition to the slope they were shelling.
