Hi all, looking at starting out with some scrambling and wondering if anyone can suggest a course and company / individual to take me through the basics in Snowdonia. Cheers

You could try Plas y Brenin. Good luck

We run lots of bespoke courses and have availability in Snowdonia from April onwards. Drop me a message through UKC or the contact form here: https://www.straightupadventures.co.uk/contact

Make sure any course you book onto is staffed by someone holding at least the MCI qualification, or higher.

Wasn't there a bloke called Dave who did a video on Scambling on Crib Goch. He'd be good to learn you!

Met him down the pub, I did.

There are occasionally posts on here about trainee instructors wanting to take people out scrambling as practice clients. They're not allowed to charge money for it, the client doesnt get the reassurance that their training is fully complete, but at that point they've passed the first stages.

A quick Internet search showed that you can register interest with Glenmore Lodge in Scotland as a mock client. You mind find similar website/forum/social media post for Wales if you look hard enough.

Rob and Huw are great, I've scrambled/climbed with both of them.

I expect I will get some negative response but my advice would be just go and do it. Get a scrambling guide book. There will be advice in there on what you will need and how to get started. You will get far more satisfaction by learning yourself. Remember to check the weather forecast. Good and luck and enjoy yourself.

In reply to Groundhog:

This isn't terrible advice at all. Some grade 1 scrambles, as you might expect, are little more than a walk. Start on the llech ddu spur or the north ridge of tryfan and then progress to crib goch and see how you go.

Very much depends on your background. As a confident hill walker with good navigation skills and a good head for heights, yes probably no need for a guide on grade ones.

But if you are unfamiliar with mountain environments, taking a guide is about much more than just the scrabbling.

In reply to Jenny C:

Course implies instruction, not guiding. If op wants a guide they should hire a guide and if they want a nav course they should book a nav course. If they want to learn a bit of ropework to protect harder scrambles they could pay someone qualified to teach them. But for doing easy scrambles I'm struggling to think what there is to actually teach that can't be summed up in the first few pages of a scrambling guidebook.

Familiarity comes from experience which comes from getting outside and having a go and also, importantly, from making your own decisions rather than relying on a professional to make them for you.

Weird. OP asks for recommendations and every post with someone who works in outdoors or recommends someone gets downvoted.

No wonder the few other Snowdonia (Eryri) instructors who frequent these forums have kept their distance.

For some reason it wouldn't let me edit or delete either post! Serves me right for posting first thing in the morning.
