I saw Buffalo's facebook post announcing this. Condolences to his friends and family. I'm not sure why but I thought he had passed away a long time ago but I must have been mixing him up with one of the other inventor-entrepreneurs that don't seem so common any more in the British outdoor industry.
I sent off my self addressed envelope to Buffalo I think having seen their advert in first ever copy of Climber and Hillwalker that I had bought. I got a load of marketing bumpf back, but nothing like you would get now - most of it was photocopies of Hamish's handwritten design notes and trip reports in letter form from people who had used Buffalo kit on their trips. From that, I got my first 'proper' sleeping bag in 1988 - the Buffalo 4S Outer (I remember getting up very early and lying in my new bag on the sofa to watch GB beat Germany for the Gold in Seoul Olympics Hockey final!). I got my first Mountain Shirt ready to go to Greenland on a BSES expedition the summer I finished my A levels, 1991. When I started uni in Glasgow and worked in outdoor shop I got the full Double P kit (Big Face shirt, Salopettes and Belay Jacket https://www.ukclimbing.com/photos/dbpage.php?id=22919 ) for below cost price direct from Buffalo because we were flogging so many mountain shirts in the shop! Buffalo were always a great company to deal with, I got the feeling Hamish always just wanted to make really good kit for terrible weather, the whole business side of it was just an afterthought.
I didn't know he also invented Pertex - does anyone know where I can read more about that? How did it differ from other light nylons that were around before it?
RIP.
