Often looked up there and thought there must be some ok rock. What's it like?

Most of the edge is choss (including the highest section in the middle of the photo) but the areas where we have sought permission to climb contain excellent natural gritstone. We have done 5 new routes at Hangingstone scar and 12 at High Loven scar. I have put topos online for the Hangingstone scar routes (as well as other relevant info) at the link below and will do the same for High Loven scar when I have the time. The crags will also appear on the BMC RAD soon.

We went up there in 1989 and again about ten or twelve years later. Gardened some lines on the southerly crag (Hangingstone Scar) but didn't actually climb anything. I attempted a good looking arete but backed off as I didn't have a small enough cam to get the crucial pro. I discovered that the Gritstone Club were active here in the early sixties. I have a photocopy of their discoveries if you want - mostly on the northerly section?
