We choose this climb because Ken had his eye on Shibboleth and wanted a closer look... it was very impressive!
Guerdon Grooves was enjoyable but, not without interest...protection was spaced and sparse, mainly slings over spikes [no wires or cams in those days]. The other main issue in those days was that the top grade in Scotland was VS, so you were never sure if the route was just VS or actually Extreme / E2 etc. [It wasn't until 1976, that the SMC eventually used the English "E" grade system in their guide books...we all breathed a sigh of relief!
PS. Ken returned in 1967 to climb Shibboleth.

What is he wearing on his feet? They look like EB's, but I don't think those came out until 1969.

Surely they're PAs which predated EBs?
Great photo as always, Tony. Shibboleth has been on my list to do for years... sadly, it could well remain there.

First time the SMC used the E grade was in the 1978 journal. I think the first of their guide books to use E grades would have been Glencoe about 1981.

Hi again gentlemen. Many thanks for your comments... I have checked the year printed on the original Kodak slide "May 1966". The rock shoes are PA's.
Thanks to Colin for correcting the year Scotland began using the E grade.
