Bernard Newman, born in Birmingham in 1950, was part of the Leeds climbing scene in the 1970's where he studied Geology at Leeds University. He was well known for his climbing photography and with Ken Wilson compiled Extreme Rock, part of the Classic and Hard Rock series of books published by Wilson. Newman was editor of Mountain magazine until it folded and was well known for his anti-bolt editorials in the 1980's. When Mountain folded he was briefly involved, as a contributing editor in another magazine, Mountain Review that ran for six issues and was well received.
Newman started at Climber magazine in April 1998. Climber magazine is owned by Warners Group Publications plc.
