To help inspire the next generation of conservationists and outdoor enthusiasts, free training courses in landscape issues are being offered to outdoor instructors and other group leaders in the Lake District.

The Lake District National Park Authority is hoping to encourage as many activity providers as possible to make use of the two-hour instruction sessions.

The Park Authority's learning co-ordinator Anne Blackburn said it was an invaluable opportunity not just to help students, but for those inspiring them about the precious environment:

'Thousands of people come to the Lake District every year, either on residential courses or holiday and for many it's the beginning of a lifelong love of the area.'

'If we can help leaders understand the issues, activities and practical ways of looking after the landscape, it augers well for the future.'

The course is aimed at anyone who delivers outdoor experiences in the Lake District, Anne tells us.

'So far we have delivered it to instructors at outdoor education centres. This time we are widening the audience to include freelance instructors and others who lead a whole range of outdoor activities.'

'We will give them information about the National Park and ideas on how to encourage people to care for the park and put something back as well as enjoying it.'

Courses have already been held at Coniston and Borrowdale. The next is at the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole on April 26. Anyone interested in joining the next session should contact Anne on 01539 792895.
