Mount Damavand is a potentially active stratovolcano which is the highest peak in Iran as well as the highest volcano in Asia. Due to its high altitude and beautiful conical shape, it has attracted many climbers.
There are at least 16 known routes to the summit, with varying levels of difficulty. Some of them are very dangerous and require a good level of rock climbing ability.
The best major settlement for mountain climbers is the new Iranian Mountain Federation Camp in the village of Polour, located on the south of the mountain.
