A reasonably good Dolerite crag. One E5, but everything else is Diff to HVS. The 'Definitive' guide was produced by the Wanneys Climbing Club. Veterans Way represents probably the best protected V Diff in Northumberland. Site well worth a visit. A full guide is at http://northumberlandclimbing.co.uk/index.php?v=5&s=2&id=67
Recommend to remove this crag from the database. Just attempted to go in late Feb and the vegetation and moss make it nearly unclimbable. The site has restricted access and has the annual bluebell walk. The only access to the crag is to walk directly over these plants. We did ask for permission from the owner at the folly though they were old and frail. She was happy for us to climb though we bailed after checking it out.
Pictures on the Northumberland Climbing guide are 20 years old and don't reflect the true state now.
From Alnwick bypass take the B1340, signposted to Alnwick, Denwick & Seahouses. Turn right through Denwick and then right again towards Longhoughton. After a mile, turn right at the cross-roads go past the crag. Park in a layby opposite the drive to Ratcheugh Folly. Follow the track at the edge of the wood until under folly and then go straight up to the crag. Alternately, from Alnwick take the A1068 signposted to Alnmouth and Ashington for 2 miles until a left turn is taken towards Longhoughton. Do not park in the triangle of grass under the crag, this will only draw the attention of gamekeepers who will wonder what you're up to. Ask the lady at the folly to let her know you're on the crag.
The middle section is a bit overgrown. South of Narrow Buttress is fine. TizzyA - 27/Sep/16 |
