Hnappavellir is Iceland's best climbing location. Situated on the south coast beneath the majestic Öræfajökull (wasteland glacier), the crag houses well over 100 sport routes of mostly good quality. The guidebook is available from klifurhusið in Reykjavik and, though all in icelandic, is straightforward to understand. There is also plenty of bouldering and a small hut for cooking as well as BBQ's and camping space (no sleeping in the hut).
A topo can be downloaded at https://www.blurb.com/b/11035084-hnappavallahamrar-2022 or purchased at Klifurhusið climbing gym in Reykjavik. Photos of routes can also be found at https://www.klifur.is/crag/hnappavellir Please note that although Iceland uses the USA 5. grading system, the grades are usually not comparable to elsewhere in the world until somewhere in the 5.11 range. Grades below this are often several grades harder than stated, bare this in mind when starting out on the easier routes!
Situated along the main route 1 road east past Skaftafell. Take a small dirt road southeast opposite the Hnappavellir II sign, the crag is obvious, follow the road round to the right and through the small river and there is a parking area next to a campsite and hut. If using the campsite please donate 2500kr to the maintainers of the area - cost goes into work, improvements and bolt fund. Payment can be made in Klifurhusið climbing gym (Reykjavik) or at a nearby tour company, they can then give the code for the hut which should remain locked. Misuse will affect access to the crag. Walking between areas is easy. Please do not drive past the campsite.
Note, there is a small river crossing which can be done in a normal car but with caution.
The crag is on private land and uses a private road. Misuse has caused some issues and there is now a lock on the hut. If using the land please be respectful and pay the very small camping/access/bolt fund fee. The landowners do not wish for any cars on their land, so please do not driver further than the campsite as this could affect climbers access to the area.
