An underrated route on an underrated crag - Right of Way VS 4c © Simon Caldwell
Hebden Gill is one of the great overlooked crags of Yorkshire Grit. Its setting is both tranquil and picturesque, while its climbing includes a fair few treasures. These include the superb VS Right of Way and the fantastic Prosecutor HVS, as well as some impressive extremes on the sheer Crevasse Wall. Strongly recommended for a good day out.
This gem, so near to Grassington, is perplexing for its lack of visitors - either for this generation or in the days of yore. With routes up to about 18 metres in length, many on natural grit, there is not a hint of polish and rarely evidence of visitation. Lack of traffic does not seem to hinder this crag however and vegetation is at a minimum. Some of the finishes can be a little loose, especailly on the quarried wall and care will be needed.[The hanging block above Tree Climb HS looks very suspect].
Drive to the village of Hebden from Grassington. Take the minor road north for about a mile and park near the holiday cottages. From there head throught he gate take the bridge over the stream and work up to the the crag. A slightly longer approach with the crag in full view can also be made.
