These waterfalls lie directly beneath the peak of Gaustatoppen and the trio of climbs under the name Gaustatoppfossen are usually the first in the area to come into condition each year due to their high elevation and shadowy location. Despite this lofty situation above Rjukan, the Gaustatoppenfossene is not very exposed but does have splendid views over Hardangervidda. In contrast, the Høgfoss Area is tremendously exposed even though it is situated lower on the hillside of Gaustatoppen.
