The best climbing area around Akureyri in the north. Routes up to 15m. Generally good rock, with interesting features and some fun routes. Generally well bolted, most routes have a double hanger anchor, but it's easy to walk around and clean from above. The routes are in a river canyon and the river can be very loud. The first routes here were trad but around 1990 the first bolted lines were set up mostly by Páll Sveinsson, Björn Baldursson, Stefán Smárason og Árni G Reynisson.
Routes are listed from left (west) to right (east).
Please note that although Iceland uses the USA 5. grading system, the grades are not comparable, especially in the lower grades up to around 5.10-11 ish. Usually routes below this are several grades harder than the given grade.
Munkaþverá is located about 15km south of Akureyri. It is best to continue on Route 1 east out of Akureyri and cross the water at Leirubúna (at N1) then turn south on Road 829. When you reach the farm of Munkaþverá, cross the bridge over the river Þverá and park on the right hand side next to some sheep pens. Space for several cars. To reach the canyon, walk back over the bridge to the north side of the river and turn left (west) and walk over the top of the cliffs, crossing a damaged fence. Follow a steep footpath down into the gorge.
