An essential part of the Big Round process, reccying is a lot more than simply learning the route and preparing mind and body for the endurance challenge to come: it's also about trialling food, clothing, kit and footwear so you're absolutely sure what will work on the big day. Don't leave any of it to chance, says Rob Greenwood.
Something that made a big difference to me was doing some overnight runs. For example I went to the end of Loch Treig on a Friday after work, set off about 9pm and ran through the night to the ruins at Loche Eilde Mor where I bivvied. As well as night nav practice and route familiarisation it let me see how I handled running while tired and how my eating was in the wee small hours, something lots of people struggle with.
