For downhill skiing.

Used to own a Helly Hansen set, and they were good, but this was decades ago and am I missing a trick? Thanks.

HH used to smell vile after one outing, is this still the case?

Whatever your question is, yes.

Helly Hansen Lifa tops were the original gold standard and unique at first, but now there's a heap of good base layers better. I'd say they were bettered by the alternatives by the late 90s or something.

Just look for long sleeve (or short) running tops. You'll  need to do a bit of sorting wheat from chaff, there's plenty out there, some are very good.

All the synthetic stuff can start to smell. It's a cumulative problem, stuff only gets worse even if it smells fine out of the wash.

The solution is buy some laundry steriliser and soak all your base layers etc in a bucket with it (following the instructions) on a regular basis before washing normally and the problem goes away. Not before every wash, but regularly.

Cheers. I committed to a HH top and leggings this afternoon. I do remember that smell. It hopefully won't cause too much problems, only away for a week.
