I've just been to the post office to send an ice axe to America and they refused to post it stating it was a weapon. I then tried Fed Ex and UPS and they quoted £50 with no guarantee it won't be destroyed on arrival. Has anyone else encountered this? Can anyone recommend a courier that's not ridiculous?
Thanks.

I assume you took the pick off the shaft? Makes it less scary

You could always call one of the mountain gear companies in the UK and say you want to order an ice axe to America (how's your yank accent?) and then ask about postage and who they'd use.

In reply to crayefish:

It's a 1970's wooden shaft chouinard. I think I'll just end up breaking it if I try to remove the pick.

Just bend the truth and say it is a mountaineering walking stick.

I am sure that without the axe, they wouldn't blink.

In reply to Dave Heaton: I had to argue with a lady in the post office as to whether a Swiss army knife constituted a weapon at Christmas. I won, but she got the last word in with "well, if they decide it's not allowed it will be returned and you will have to collect it". It got to Scotland without anyone being injured...
Maybe change your description or ask an outdoor shop how they post them?

Do the arms smugglers not use 'Tractor Parts'
