Are we seeing the beginning of the end of Test cricket. Batsmen seem to play as if they were in a 20/20 or limited overs game, no one trying to "dig in" and build an innings. Has been like this the whole series.

No, it's an evolution. T20 has had an impact on players psyche, but in a positive way - more self belief, more willingness to attack. We have seen some big scores in this series. And sometimes attack is the best form of defense - if the ball is unpredictable and you reckon you'll get an unplayable one soon, you want to get a few runs first.

And in the time it has taken for me to write that, 2 more wickets have fallen !

Stunning figures for Broad

Perhaps the stumps could be burnt and preserved in a little urn, presented to the Aussies as something to take home as a memento.

Time for Lyth to put his hand up
 Bob 06 Aug 2015
In reply to Philip:

Just looked - Broad's figures were 8 for 15. In fact Finn's figures were the worst - a paltry 1 for 21.

This from the BBC site:

"18.3 overs is the quickest any team has ever been bowled out in the first innings of a Test match.

"Stuart Broad's 8-15 are the best figures in a Test match for England since Devon Malcolm's 9-57 against South Africa in 1994."

Awesome bowling by Broad...on the mark immediately....there was movement around the whole pitch so lets see what happens!!

Saw some twitter comments earlier suggesting that Cook should have declared on zero to make the Aussies bat again straight after that session, and maybe bowl them out twice in a day!

Apparently that is the first time in the Ashes that the "extras" scored more than any batsman.
 Welsh Kate 06 Aug 2015

My dear departed father would have been very pleased at that, he always keenly supported Extras and was very pleased when Extras managed a big score!

Nice battling display. declare at 260 and have down with them ?
 Chris Harris 06 Aug 2015

Seven fours & 14 extras = 42 runs of the 60 scored.

That means they actually ran just 18 runs.

Another record?

England missing Anderson , I see. Now he would have used these conditions! Joe Root (FEC) looked world class from the very first ball I ever saw him face in tests. He hasn't disappointed. He could overtake Smith as world no 1!

To anyone who knows their cricket he already has. The statistics don't tell the full story, good accumulator though Smith has turned out to be. AB de Villiers and Amla are both far superior to SS who just about deserves fourth ranking in what is an ageing top ten.

Keep an eye on Kane Williamson though. wonderful player.

The extras total was the highest score for the Aussies, apparently this is the first time that it's happened in an Ashes test. That implies that it's happened before but to which team? I'm not a cricket statistician so might have a struggle finding this out.

It's dead easy - google "extras top scorer" and the first link is this

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/282985.html

When you listen to the commentary it's amazing how quick the scorer can come up with answers to the question they pose (e.g. has anyone scored twice the oppositions first innings score on day 1).

Of course Bill Frindall would have done it without a computer, and just as quick !

In reply to the sheep:

And before we get carried away
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ausvpak09/content/story/442690.html

The aussies conceded a first innings deficit of 291 in 1992, and 206 in 2010, and went on to win
 Bob 07 Aug 2015
In reply to Chris the Tall:
TBH, I hadn't tried. One of those things I thought would be either too obscure or would require some odd database query.

Edit: currently every England player (including extras) but apart from Ian Bell has scored more than any of the Aussie batsmen.

Gah! Root's just gone.

 Bob 07 Aug 2015

The Australian attack is woeful. England just scored 20 in the last over, that's from the tail enders rather than established batsmen.
Chris the Tall 07 Aug 2015
In reply to Bob:

Both Ali and Broad are decent all-rounders with test centuries and plenty of 50s to their credit. Finn is the only tail-ender

Ali isn't a tail ender and Broad has scored 150+

all over by stumps today?
 Roadrunner5 07 Aug 2015
In reply to Removed User:

Yeah cant see them lasting too long.. could be expensive for the refunds, won' they have to pay back 3 days worth of tickets... and a nice forecast for the weekend.

They've been pretty lucky so far, dissapointed ESPN have british commentators, I was hoping for some great americanized cricket commentary..
 balmybaldwin 07 Aug 2015
In reply to the sheep:

It'll be disappointing if we don't get them by stumps today. We've got 2 green batsmen to bowl at after tea, then we are in to the tail end. Lets face it yesterday most of their tail enders looked like they were about to burst into tears on the way back from their short walks - I can't imagine it does much for their confidence.
 Welsh Kate 07 Aug 2015
In reply to balmybaldwin:

Well at least England have done the decent thing and let things progress into a third day. Saturday's crowd get to see a couple of wickets, then head off for lunch somewhere in Nottingham!

In reply to Welsh Kate:

I'd be seriously pissed off, the time and expense of tickets and travel to see maybe an hour's play on the 3rd day!
 Roadrunner5 07 Aug 2015
In reply to Lusk:

If it lasts less than 10 overs I think tehy get a full refund..

But yeah that was my thinking why the umpires called time then, to at least try and save a third of the lost ticket revenue..
Chris the Tall 07 Aug 2015
In reply to Lusk:
