Stepson has just bought himself a tent. He won't be doing any serious camping just yet - couple of nights here and there in established sites.

Anyway he's asked me about buying a camping stove.

Any recommendations for an "entry level" stove please.

Thanks

How old and how sensible?

Trangias are nice and simple, stable, slower than gas.

Gas setups cheap and quick, often less stable.

Trangia. Safe, easy, robust. Not cheap but lasts forever.

How old? I'd say remote gas stove (not canister top) eg alpkit koto https://www.alpkit.com/products/koro

In reply to mypyrex: the ones using maths are rubbish for cooking or bowling water tho'. Id advise gas

He's 43 and VERY sensible. Myself, for ease of use, I would go for gas. I have a Pocket Rocket but have found it can be a little bit top heavy

I'm sure our Trangia will be pleased to hear that

He's 43? Surely old enought to make an educated guess. Plenty of review websites out there

Pocket rocket is my suggestion though

I have Pocket Rocket for 13 pounds posted if you want one.

My second guess would be solid fuel, but it can be fiddly to use.

But he's never done any outdoors type of activity before so he's looking to me for guidance.

Will he be car camping or walking?

For walking something like this would be fine

For car camping something like this maybe?

In reply to galpinos:

I'd go remote gas (with preheat tube), too, as they're simple, light, controllable, stable and versatile. Only minor downside is use in long grass.

I'd have recommended the Karrimor Alpine stove, which Sports Direct were knocking out for £17, but it looks like they may have sold them all. Same design and manufacturer as the Koro (Fire Maple), but in stainless steel rather than Ti.

Primus Eta Spider - job done

If you buy the kit version it comes with a pot, bowl, piezo igniter all fitting inside a carry case/insulating cozy. Can be stripped down for light trips.

Avoid the Trangia though, unless you're getting the gas conversion though

The meths ones are crap for cooking on
