Groan .... I am trying to get a bit more mileage done - aiming at 10 miles per week but falling behind a bit so was going to do nine miles this afternoon BUT inadvertently went for an eight mile walk with my son after lunch. Ok, that's not a long walk, but long enough perhaps for my muscles to notice it. At any rate, the run was dire; quite painful (sciatic pain, and the arches of my feet feeling stressed) and far too tiring. I took a short cut and did seven miles with a couple of short rests. I am now knackered, but pleased to have kept going.

Is this just me being middle-aged, or is there something more specific about two different sorts of exercise in quick succession?

In reply to BusyLizzie:

Walking and running use different muscles. When I ran all the time I found it hard work walking slower with my wife. Don't worry, it is all "time on your feet", every little counts.
