Please recommend me a holdall. Essential requirements are:

Approx. 80 litres (give or take 20 litres)

Multiple compartments/pockets so I can separate gear from ropes, or more likely, pants from socks. NOT just wet and dry compartments a la Mountain Equipment.

Combination carry system, ie handles and rucksac straps

Soft construction, no wheels or rigid sides, for easy loading into car etc

Any suggestions much appreciated. 3 out of 4 of the above to enter. 4/4 hits the jackpot!!

Thanks everyone

With those demands i'd be looking at Eagle Creek. Not sure which one though as we went for one with wheels, bloody brilliant.

How about a camera/camera equipment bag?
Lowepro do an extensive range, but are quite expensive...

That is one option but it's nice to be able to rummage in open compartments rather than in sealed storage.

I do already have a holdall with five or six compartments and some packing cubes for when I'm feeling really OCD, ie most of the time, but it is a big rigid unit with wheels etc and not so easy to squeeze into the boot along with all my other kit, axes, pro, boots etc. It's bloody brilliant in every other respect and the wheels are very handy at times too, especially in airports. I was just hoping to find something similar for car trips.

I agree. I find compartments are fine when it's just clothes, but restrictive when I am packing weird gear. Simple holdall + cheap drybags are my approach.

Base camp duffel (pick your brand), and a few old carrier bags?

Works for me.

It may be worth exploring the military/tactical market rather than mountaineering/outdoors.

5.11 are a decent, if pricey, brand:

Good tip. This is the closest I've found so far:
