Thought I'd post a follow up. Kamchatka is a fantastic place and we were blessed with really good weather. We didn't climb Kluchevskaya Sopka but did climb Tolbachik, getting fantastic views. Tragically I understand there have been four or five deaths this year on Kamen and we met the rescue crew for the first incident.

I think that wearing full down clothing at night wouldn't have been very restful, but using a lightweight sleeping bag and down jacket over that would have been fine. Then again it wasn't very cold at all. In the end I used a lightweight down jacket in the evenings and a good down sleeping bag, which I seldom needed to zip up.
