Ridge Raider as summer alpine basecamp tent

I'm spending 25 days in the mountains in Montenegro this summer on a caving expedition. The base camp will be in a very remote spot and we have an absolute ton of gear to carry up so everything has to be as light weight as possible. Could I get away with using the rab ridge raider as a basecamp tent or will I be miserable? During the night it will get to around zero and occasionally it pours down in true alpine syle, am I pushing it a bit with a single skinned but hooped bivvy shelter?

You could take a fairly roomy tent for the same weight.

In reply to Red Rover: Long time to spend in a shelter you can only lie in. 1100 grams is your weight to match/beat with a tent. I just bought the cheaper version of this http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/tents-and-spares/all-tents/zephyros-1-lite-tent... its got enough room for me to sit up in, a porch big enough to cook in (with care) and if looks to be a wind shedding shape for and windy conditions. The terra nova version whist a lot of money is even lighter, although it has a smaller porch which will be a disadvantage in the wet.

In reply to Red Rover: its the standard weight one, same company, got it from cotswolds for £100. I am off to the lakes today so will camp out at either stickle tarn if lazy or angle tarn if feeling like a bit of a trek.

for £27, give the bags and mats to a street sleeper and you have a tent that weighs 2.2kg with room to sit up and read during those long rainy evenings.

In reply to scott titt: Yes I think it would be unpleasent in such a small tube for so long, I assumed there were no affordable tents of a similar weight but there are.

15 days isn't as bad as 25 and it depends where else you have available to go, for cooking, when it's raining etc.

But I'd think about a tarp to offer a bit more protection, storage space, somewhere to sit when it's raining, cooking, etc.

In reply to winhill: With a tarp you can get away with a very simple bivvy, I have a snugpak bivi bag with a sltarp 1 for fast and light (reality slow and light), make for a very good rain shelter for getting in and out of bag and for cooking under.

I'd take either a Laser Comp or a Power Lizard. Bigger footprint than a bivi mind, but same weight or less than the Rab bivi.
