Seem to spend a bit too much of my life behind the wheel of my car, and have noticed that listening to podcasts and suchlike make me a more patient, safer driver than listening to music so have decided to give some audiobooks a try.

Just been looking on iTunes at a few books, but they seem a bit pricey so am wondering if anyone knows of any decent sites where the audiobooks are better value?
In reply to steev: An Amazon kindle has an audio reader included. The unit itself is £110 but you can download hundreds of classic novels for free. There are also collections of thirty science fiction classic for 75p etc

In reply to steev: i have an Audible subscription, any book on there site for £7.99, one download a month, but you get books that are £25+ for only £7.99, got some great books from there, and it is where iTunes get there's from but iTunes put a charge on top of the Audible cost.

Thanks for all of your replies. Went for an Audible trial subscription - only £4 for an audiobook. Bargain.

Straggler: Thanks for that link - will definitely investigate that!

Check out your council's library website. Mine (Bristol) has recently started doing online audiobook loans. You download, get given a license and have 30 days to listen to it (renew if you want).

They offer a pretty good selection - I wonder how widespread this service is?

I listen to audiobooks during my commute. I can't play MP3s through my old stereo, so i get complete novels on CDs from the library. I know the library also do the downloadable/expirable MP3 audiobooks.

Might have to look into the library option, although something tells me that highland council might not be up to that just yet

If you are interested in older, out-of-copyright books, then you could always browse through the http://librivox.org/ website.
