I'm planning a multi day ski tour in Austria next March. Thinking of either Silvretta or Tyrol.
Does anyone have any experience of booking huts in these areas? Keen to leave it until last minute as may not get the conditons, is it possible to turn up and expect there to be space? Or should I do it in advance?
Cheers

I've been in three tours in the Silvretta, but all  were pre covid. On the first one were told there was no room at the Jamtal when we tried to book 3/4 days in advance. Since then I've always tended to book, optimistically, well in advance and try to change bookings if I have to. The Heidelberger hut has always been OK in terms of how busy it was, but have spent a couple of nights in the Wiesbadener hut properly crammed in. This was probably in peak ski touring season, just before Easter.

Except in an emergency it is very poor practice to turn up at any Alpine hut without booking even if its on the day, by phone.

Silvretta is a busy area and the huts book up quickly especially during holiday periods. Depends where you are thinking of in Tyrol

Just about every hut is bookable online and has reasonable cancellation policies

Some can be found here or on their own websites

Silvretta: I'd say book ahead if you want to go, booking is pretty much mandatory now everywhere anyway. One thing you could do is check German/Dutch holiday times and leave the booking until you get a reasonable weather forecast. There's a few weeks in March where there's no holidays, so gets quieter (usually north Germany and some parts of the Netherlands have their school holidays in march). That being said, Silvretta is a tourist trap anyway and all the huts might book out soon in advance.

Tirol generally: Depending on where you're going you get good and less busy huts, just make sure your tour planning is good. Here's the site us locals use: https://www.bergsteigen.com/touren/skitour/

If I was you, I'd scope out some options either side of the alps (north and south) and check long-range forecasts, snow heights and avalanche conditions, and decide a couple of days beforehand which option is the best

Cheers
