A friend of mine has a slot at an open mike type thing, coming up soon. She's not confident enough yet to play her own stuff, so it's a set of 6 covers. The idea is she wants to build a wee narrative, of a love affair from start to finish. The one she's stuck on, is a song expressing the feeling of starting to fall in love with someone, they're crazy for you, but you're not sure yet. Any ideas?

In case she changes the thread, how about this classic ? I love the original, but have it done slowly, by female singers - very versatile song

Buzzcocks / Ever fallen in love...

Crazy by Willie Nelso, sung by Patsy Cline, would probably make a good finale.

Alice Russell - Heartbreaker ?

Ooh, that's just brought up some great memories. My dad was a big C+W fan. My guilty pleasure as a teenage punk in the 70's was listening to his record collection. He had a Patsy Cline album that I loved. What a voice! Her expression and delivery is so emotive and beautiful.

Whether she performs it or not, it sounds to me like that’s the song she should write.

What instrument does she play, and is she good at it?

Because, if it's guitar John Martyn's I don't want to know would fit the brief, just about.  I don't think it's the easiest thing to play though.

Alternatively, and in a very different style, AC/DC's Highway to Hell could work too, depending on how she wants to tell me story.

And in a third different style, Thea Gilmore's Stop it, you're making me happy would also work.  So that's ragtime jazz added to classic rock and acoustic guitar.  Something will work.

How about this classic ballad from the marvellous Tom Waits: I hope that I don't fall in love with you...

That is a hard ask, aln!  If she was singing from the other person’s perspective, “Crazy for You” by Let Loose would be perfect.

Is this in Glasgow?  If it’s early evening I could be tempted to drive over and shout you both a drink.

Perhaps this classic from Dana Countryman fits the bill.  Great chords and a perfect 3 minute pop song.

Agreed.

In reply to aln:

I wondered whether this “haunting song about a scary surrender to a love that may not be returned” could be made to fit but I don’t think it can, sadly:

She plays a few instruments, acoustic guitar for this. Better than she thinks she is, but I think John Martyn and jazz might be a bit much for her debut.

In reply to JLS:

That is a fantastic song but isn't more about falling in love at 1st sight?

OP aln 13 May 2024
In reply to JSTaylor:

I've never heard anything by him other than One Night in Bangkok, that's excellent, thank you. But kinda opposite to the sentiment we're looking for.

In reply to Robin Montaigne:

An absolute classic, but again, maybe a bit much for a debut.

How about Morrissey’s Suedehead…

Ok, it would take a little rearranging but how about Bring me to life by Evanescence?  Shame about the jazziness, because Caramel by Suzanne Vega would fit the theme but it is a bit Parisian boulevard late-night jazz (and very nice too).

Actually no, scratch Evanescence, I've just remembered it's a two-part vocal.

This one  youtube.com/watch?v=BcxkiEpzyHo& ? Athlete are underrated and that's a great song but just not right.

Your friend is asking a lot. Why would anyone write a song about something they're not really bothered about, dwelling on the point that someone else is in love with them? Maybe Donald Trump might. It would be a rubbish song anyway.

Considering then that there are likely no perfect matches, here's my suggestion: a slow, softly spoken acoustic version of the Prodigy's Firestarter.." I'm a fire starter, twisted fire starter... I'm the pain you tasted, felt intoxicated"

You haven't read the OP properly. I'm wondering why someone would write a reply to a thread they're not bothered about. Anyway, thanks for your suggestion.

I didn't mean to offend you, but I can see how I did: my apologies. But I did read your OP properly, was interested, and liked your friend's idea. Would you let us know what she eventually chooses for an opener?

 McHeath 17 May 2024
In reply to aln:

I’d say that this is one of those cases where the UKC hive mind can’t help. If she can’t put her own programme together with that theme, she should simply play the six songs she loves the most and give a brief introduction to each and tell the story of why she loves them and what they mean to her. It’ll come from the heart, and that’s what counts.
