Trekking in the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia

The Simien Mountains are situated in the remote northern hinterland of Ethiopia. The landscape has been eroded into towering buttes and mesas, volcanic pinnacles, gaping gorges and gullies. A National Park on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it is home to endangered endemic species like the grass-eating Gelada baboon, the enormous horned Walia ibex, and the Ethiopian wolf. The Simien Mountains conjure up an almost prehistoric world of primeval forests, misty peaks, bizarre plants and exotic creatures and trekking these stunning highlands is like stepping into an otherworldly paradise. We did an eight day trek of almost 100km, taking in Ras Bwahit, a summit over 4400m high en route.
