I had to google the name. Is that 'Tititea/Aspiring' on the left? If so, what's the closer peak on the right? I've done lots of walking around the area but nothing big like these.

Magical

Thanks Robert. Lankyman, that peak on the right is Rob Roy with a bit of Mt Avalanche appearing behind it to the left. Both are around 2600m. Tititea is indeed the far one on the left.

Have other peaks been given Maori names (eg Earnslaw, Tasman?). In the nineties it was just 'Mt Aspiring'.

What a camp-site. Superb setting!

Yes there's a trend towards acknowledging the original Maori names of some of the mountains. I love learning these Maori names and their history - it's respecting the native custodians of the land. Some of them are very beautiful words. There are also some rather nice mountain names in the English language - Dragonfly Peak, Mainroyal, Lochnagar, Mitre Peak, Centaur Peaks, Cosmos Peak, Poseidon Peak, Stargazer and Skyscraper.

There are also some real 'howlers'. I once scrambled up a Billies Knob near Mt Owen ....

Yes, and there's Mt Awful, Mt Chosspile, Mt Avalanche and Mt Barff. Conversely, you have names like The Warrior, The Great Unknown and Savage Peak. It's a mixed bag!
