This was the first time Johnny and I climbed together and the start of a long and strong friendship that remains today. I won the toss for who would lead first. I found the pitch to be deceptively steep, with hard climbing, and very poor protection... no Cams or Hex's in those days. I had one good runner at 5m, the rest were very poor [in fact I resorted to placing a steel carabiner, long ways on, across the crack as a runner! I don't think it would held even a tiny fall]. I imagine with todays equipment the climb is very safe!

Great photo of a very gutsy lead.

I did Extol in the very early 70s and I would be surprised if I had more than 4 runners in 150ft Tony. And I remember thinking that the pro was OK. Times change!
