Non poisonous , round pupils

I wouldn't use that as a general rule for identifying venomous snakes!
Where was this? USA? If so, my guess would be a diamondback water snake.

Hi Dave you are absolutely right, Mambas and other very poisonous snakes have round pupils. However, here in Spain we have three venomous snakes, the two most common ones (both vipers and most poisonous) have slits, the third one, has round pupils but apparently the fangs are too far back to cause harm to a human. However, this one on first acquaintance seemed a viper, on closer inspection it became clear it wasn't.

You've got pretty close there - you wouldn't want him to strike up a friendship!
