My forebears came from just such places in Ireland, loads of kids crammed in together, everybody struggling desperately to survive.

My in-laws country, often rambled up from the Glen of Aherlow into the hills, lots of sad such structures.

Back in the 1990s, Gerry Moss wrote the most marvellous essay, 'Playbank', about making climbing visits to the Cuilcaghs over many years and witnessing the sad demise of a local farm. There was a phrase, something like 'the silence of untended fields', which was utterly heartbreaking. Life goes on - in other ways, other forms...
