J-M used étriers, but Christian did the Fissure en S and o’hang above free and I perforce likewise (in big boots, direct tie on etc). It was a major breakthrough for me and we did the route in 3 1/4hrs, with the original exit (horrid, now abandoned: I’ve since done two other exits).

Classic, John. I'd almost forgotten what climbing in big, stiff, boots was like. Curiously delicate and somehow secure-feeling at the same time. An outstanding picture (and the others are pretty stellar too)

It wasn't that long after that we saw the first tapes over from the states, any colour you liked as long as it was orange!
