In a post on UKC some years ago I had praised Barry's climbing ability, but said that his rope handling and runner management left much to be desired. Reg Phillips recently sent me this photo with a comment like "Who are you to criticize someone else's ropework"?
That day I had led up The Neb but could not do the crux moves at the top, so I reversed the climb leaving the runners in place. I can't remember why Al or Barry's second did not climb, but Bags made short of it using my gear and I had to do the climb again to retrieve it - so I almost did the climb three times that day. I guess that sort of explains the ropes, but they do look a bit of a mess!

Love these 'old' photos.
Barry's climbing log, available on the internet, dates this to either feb or march of 62 but as you were there you'll know better than me. :)

You are correct baron - I knew it was early in 1962 and just guessed at April. However, I was not aware of the website and have just taken a quick look. There is some fascinating material there, much of which I remember well. Thanks for the introduction - I will study it over the weekend.

Barry's log and photos certainly give an insight into what climbing was like in the 1950's and early 1960's.
For most of us Barry is just a footnote in the story of the Eiger but his website shows much more about the man.
I hope it brings back happy memories.
