The picture shows Sullivan making an early ascent [possibly the 3rd]. Its interesting to view the cutting edge climbing equipment of the day [or lack of it]. Gear was basic to say the least, a few long slings and a couple of pebbles in your pocket for inserting into a crack for protection. Friends or wires were not yet invented. Sullivan is carrying 3/4 pegs and a hammer for emergency use only, which was the norm on "Extreme" climbs. Harnesses were not invented until the 70's so the rope was tied directly around the waist, no chalk or sticky rubber. How did we manage !!
