Sod that for a laugh; surely there are other icefalls in the Peak?

Derbyshire has a very small amount of winter climbs. It is worth the wait. Should people decide to do other things instead ? maybe

Pathetic. Use you imagination, don't follow the crowds.

It's not pathetic. The downfall is one of three waterice venues in the peak. Granted there are a few other winter lines about but all are busy at a weekend. It'ssimleif ou want to do this route you expect a wait. No one there was complaining.

I suspect that in current conditions there are many more than 3 icefall venues in the Peak, but imagination will be required.

Scottish type gullies - you're right there are quite a few if you know where to look and use your imagineation and I wouldn't queue like this for them. Mixed - you'd be shot (or similar!) for using your tools on grit/limestone. But as far as I can tell there are ver very few cascade type ice climbs. This is maily due to the geology (much softer rock) which does not produce the same kind of lines as you find in Wles or Scotland. I am waiting for a couple of projects (1 unclimed) which is nearly formed though. At the moment the Ice here was fat, and still less busy than Idwal!

there are 5 other people out of shot behind the camera and another couple lower down the gulley......

Surely the time some climbers spent queueing would have been longer than the journey time to wales/lakes

ha ha ha ha!!!! Its like 'it'll never happen' picture!

There were that many people there one night mid week last winter including some very well known/respected mountaineers. They mostly thought it was worth the effort and wait.
