Stephen Venables tours Life After Everest Gear News

In 1988, Stephen Venables became the first Brit to reach the summit of Everest alone and without supplementary oxygen. Now a renowned adventurer, writer and broadcaster, Stephen is taking to theatre stages across the country this spring, in his brand new lecture show Life After Everest, presented by adventure-based speakers specialists Speakers from the Edge, in association with Mountain Equipment.

From the disappearance of Mallory and Irvine in 1924, to the 2015 disaster when 19 people died in one day, Everest has proved a formidable challenge to even the most experienced mountaineers.  At 8,849 metres (29,032 feet), the summit rises high inside the 'death zone' where the temperature rarely breaks –30ºc and the air pressure is just a third of that at sea level.

With his 1988 achievement, Venables wrote his own extraordinary chapter in the Everest story.  With a team of just four climbers, he pioneered a new route up the gigantic East Face, reaching the summit alone, without supplementary oxygen, becoming the first Briton to do so.  Caught out by darkness on the descent, he survived a night alone in the open, without a tent or sleeping bag, at 28,000 feet.

Stephen's impressive career, spanning more than forty years, has taken him all over the world, from the Himalaya in Asia, to the European Alps, the South American Andes, the mountains of East and Southern Africa, and the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia and includes numerous 'first ascents', as well as a rescue operation when he broke both legs on Panch Chuli V.
